Use of Mobile Phones

As many of you are aware, the Government announced on Monday a tightening of the expectations with regard to the use of mobile phones in schools.

We will be considering the implications of this for our school, though we are likely to put a more robust policy in place.  I would ask that where possible, you encourage your child(ren) to leave their phones at home in the first instance.

I do realise however, this is not possible for a variety of circumstances and will be understanding of this as we consider our response.

In the meantime, if you need to contact your child(ren), or vice versa, during the school day, to support our current policy please go via Pupil Services or the Head of Year.

Social Media

I would like to remind parents/carers that most social media platforms have clear age restrictions in place. WhatsApp has a minimum age of 16 in the UK, while Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) all require users to be at least 13 years old.

YouTube also has a minimum age of 13 to hold an account, with YouTube Kids designed specifically for younger children. To help keep children safe online, I encourage parents/carers to talk regularly about online activity, check privacy and parental control settings, remind children not to share personal information, and ensure they know to speak to a trusted adult if anything online makes them feel worried or uncomfortable.

If you would like to know more, Internet Matters has a lot of useful information and guidance around keeping safe online.

And Finally….

Enjoy the weekend.

Jake B Essex School’s Cross Country

Jake recently competed in the Essex Schools’ County Cross Country race, where he finished in an impressive third place.

As a result, he has now qualified for the English Schools’ National Cross Country Championships, taking place on 14th March in Liverpool. Jake will represent Essex as part of the county team.

Well done to Jake, and thank you to Sweyne Park School and the PE Department for their support and encouragement.

Jake is now training hard in preparation for the national event.

What do you do when you're not in school?

We would love to hear about your hobbies, interests and achievements...

If you have any stories and/or photos that you would like to share, please contact us at pupilservices@sweynepark.com

The Times Of My Life

We would like to extend our thanks to Helen Watson for the generous donation of her recently published book, Ultimate Gap Year and Backpacking To‑Do List: Getting Ready for the Adventure of a Lifetime. Researched and compiled while her daughter — a former SPS pupil — was planning her own travels, this is the guide Helen wishes she’d had at the time.

Meticulously put together, the book covers everything from vaccinations and visas to budgeting, contingency planning, and preparing for life once you return home. It’s packed with practical advice and thoughtful tips throughout. As Helen says, “Buy for yourself, but especially for your parents!”

A copy is now available in the Maslow Library. Helen has also kindly offered a discount code (Sweyne 10) for those wishing to order directly from her website: www.timesofmylife.co.uk

The Healthy Schools Team

The Healthy Schools team are conducting research to better understand children and young people’s habits when it comes to hydration. As part of this work, we are keen to identify the challenges parents face when encouraging water consumption with children.

Their objective is to develop a resource campaign that supports both parents and schools.

We want to encourage parents to help their children adopt water-only habits before they begin school.

Parents – Hydration survey for Parents  – Fill in form

• Essex County Council is doing research into vaping among young people and would like to hear from parents and carers of 9-14 year olds. • We would like as many people as possible to complete this survey, whether they or their children vape or not. • The feedback will help us shape our future work around vaping in Essex.
PoTS is a condition that affects the autonomic nervous system, causing symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, brain fog, and a rapid heart rate when standing up.
