Commemorating Victory in Europe Day

This year marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), commemorating the end of World War II in Europe on May 8th, 1945.

At Sweyne Park, the History department brought the era to life by dressing in period costumes, helping to engage the pupils in the spirit and context of the time. Our pupils also rose to the occasion, creating some truly fantastic work to commemorate the anniversary.

Celebrating VE Day not only honours the sacrifices made for peace and freedom but also helps us all connect with the past to gain a deeper understanding of the resilience, unity, and democratic values that emerged from one of history’s most challenging times.

Works to the Bridle path

We have been asked by Rochford District Council to advise you of upcoming works to the bridle path which leads onto our school site.

The Council has provided us with the following details:

Work is due to start on 27th May 2025 for 4 weeks.  The purpose of the works is to install LED pathway lighting within Sweyne Park (the recreational area) between Victoria Avenue and Priory Chase in order to improve public safety and reduce antisocial behaviour.

This means that anyone using the bridle path may experience temporary disruption to the route while the works are undertaken. Pedestrians will be required to follow the route diversions; horse riders should wait for the contractor to make the site safe and escort them through the work area”.

Please can you remind your children of the need to factor these works into the time it takes them to get to school.  It may be that they will need to leave home a little earlier to ensure they arrive in school in time for Period 1 at 8.35am.

If you have any questions around this please contact Rochford District Council directly.

Reporting Online Harm

There are lots of different platforms with different reporting functions, tools and helplines, it can be difficult to know where to get help.  Internet Matters have produced a very useful page which details some of the organisations that help with online harm and what they do, as well as how to report on many of the social media platforms and games.

The link to the article is here: How to report online harms and issues | Internet Matters

Roblox

At the beginning of April, Roblox introduced some new tools which will allow parents / carers a greater degree of control over their child’s use of Roblox.  These tools include:

  • Limiting who their child can connect with.
  • Seeing which games their child plays the most.
  • Limiting the games their child can access.

An article from Roblox explaining this can be found here: New Tools for Parents to Personalize Their Child’s Experience on Roblox

Sustainability – Food and Textiles

As a school, we always strive to be as sustainable as possible and to ensure we get the best value for our resources to support our pupils as much as possible.

If you are planning a spring clean, we would be extremely grateful for any of the following items you might no longer need. These will be used by our Food and Textiles department to enrich learning opportunities across all key stages:

  • Reusable bags (bags for life or strong carrier bags)
  • Cutlery (knives, forks, spoons, teaspoons)
  • Jeans (any size)
  • Yarn
  • Buttons
  • Plain plates and bowls (no patterns, please)
  • Ribbons or decorative braids
  • Cushion inserts

Donations can be dropped off at either the main school office or Pupil Services during usual opening hours (although we would ask that you avoid the busiest periods at the start and end of the school day)

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and generosity. All donations will be gratefully received.

And Finally

Enjoy the warm weather.

District Athletics – Years 10 & 11

Our Year 10 pupils competed in the District Athletics Championships against a strong field of Year 11 students. Despite the challenge of competing against older athletes, our students delivered outstanding performances in what was a high-level and competitive event.

Elloise I – 2nd place in the Hurdles (featured top left)

Kevin M – 2nd place in Triple Jump and 3rd place in the 800 metres (pictured below Elloise)

We are incredibly proud of how our pupils stepped up and held their own against older, experienced competitors.
