Issue 975: 15th July 2022

Hot Weather Warning

With temperatures continuing to soar, and predictions of 39/40o on Monday and Tuesday of next week, please do take all sensible precautions. As I mentioned in my email of Wednesday 13th July, in this hot weather, pupils and student have been permitted to remove their ties.  Furthermore, on Monday and Tuesday of next week, pupils will have the option of wearing their school PE kit to school if they feel this would be more comfortable and conducive to learning.  In addition to these changes, please can I ask you to remind your child(ren) of the need to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight where possible, stay in the shade, and apply sun cream as necessary.  We will ensure that all classrooms are well ventilated which we hope will help keep both pupils/students and staff as cool as possible.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation, and stay cool!

Staff Leavers

It is the time of year where we, sadly, have to say farewell to a number of staff who are either moving on to pastures new or retiring. This year we say goodbye to Ed Hawkings, Ruth Jordan, Mark Murray and Joy Jacob, who are all retiring. They have all given so much to the school over the many years, and have a combined length of service of almost 80 years between!  and I am sure you will all want to join me in wishing them a long, happy and healthy retirement.  We are also saying farewell to Sarah Moynihan, Jennifer Porter and Jo Poole, who are moving to new schools.  We wish them all the best of luck in their new roles, and thank them for all their hard work and support during their time at Sweyne Park.

As promised, I wanted to share with you the new members of staff who will be joining us in September:

Brook Relationship and Sex Education Workshops for Parents/Carers

Brook is a charitable provider of sexual health and wellbeing for young people under 25 years. We have been notified of a free online workshop for parents/carers of secondary aged children on Relationship and Sex Education Please see the details below:

Talking to young people about their sexual health can be a challenging experience. In this training, Brook draws on over 55 years of expertise of talking to young people about their sexual health and provide a comprehensive overview of the information that you need to know.

Education and Wellbeing Specialists will explore;

  • How new legislation will impact on your young person
  • What it means for secondary school students
  • What is taught and why we teach it
  • How you can continue those conversations at home.

There will be time reserved for questions and how Brook can provide further support.

The session for secondary school aged children will be held at 6.00 pm – 7.00 pm on Thursday 21st July 2022.  Please click here for further information on how to book onto the workshop.

Uniform Expectations for September 2022

Assemblies have been held for all year groups over the last few weeks, in which expectations around uniform have been made explicit.  To ensure clarity, in particular with regards to appropriate footwear, and school trousers, you will have received a letter from Mr Edwards setting out clearly what is acceptable and what is not. Our school uniform forms part of our school’s identity, of which we are incredibly proud, and so next year we will be taking a strong stance to ensure the highest standards are maintained.  If you are having any problems obtaining uniform, please do contact Pupils Services in the first instance, on  Please rest assured that all enquiries will be dealt with in the strictest of confidence.

End of Term – Wednesday 20th July

As I mentioned in last week’s Sweyne Park Times, school will finish for the summer at 12.30 pm on Wednesday 20th July.  It will be a non-school uniform day with pupils and students raising funds in support of Ukraine.  In order to make the minimum donation of £1, we have set up a payment option on ScoPay, which we would prefer parents/carers to use, rather than asking pupils and students to bring cash into school.

Thank you, in advance, for your support.

And Finally….

Have a nice weekend.

Explorers Scout Expedition

Benjamin and Darcey raised £247.70 for their 2023 Explorers Scout Expedition for their fundraising event that took place on the 29th of June.

They are incredibly grateful to the staff and pupils at The Sweyne park School.
