Issue 927: 30th April 2021

Year 10 Parents' Evening

Further to my piece in last week’s edition of The Sweyne Park Times, I can confirm that we have now re-scheduled Year 10 Parents’ Evening to Thursday 10th June. It will take place remotely, via the School Cloud and appointments will be made available nearer the time. Please do keep an eye on your emails for further information.

Internal Exams for Years 10 and 12

In order to ensure that our pupils and students gain the important experience of sitting examinations, we have scheduled Year 10 exams to take place during the week beginning 28th June. Pupils will sit one paper per subject, and each exam will last for no more than 1.5 hours. Year 12 exams will be held during the week beginning 5th July, with one paper per subject, each exam lasting a maximum of 2 hours. A timetable for each year group will be provided in due course.

Testing Programme

Thank you to everyone who has continued to support their son/daughter to take the twice-weekly Lateral Flow Tests (LFT) at home. Please can I remind parents and carers that the results should be recorded on the TestRegister platform. In the event that your son/daughter returns a positive result, you should seek a confirmatory PCR test as soon as possible, and self-isolate pending the result. As you will know from events earlier this week, we have a continuing duty to identify close contacts, and so a positive result of a LFT should be communicated to us immediately. Thank you for your ongoing support with this incredibly important aspect of school life.

Self-Testing for Families

Essex County Council has asked us to remind parents and carers that everyone in Essex is now able to collect self-test kits from participating libraries and pharmacies. Alternatively, you can order self-test kits online. To find out where you can collect kits near you, please visit the Essex County Council website or to order self-test kits please go to GOV.UK.

As you may be aware, there is financial support available if you need to self-isolate. The criteria have recently been extended so that parents and carers may be eligible if you should need to take time off work to look after a child or young person who is self-isolating.

Regular self-testing among school communities will help keep all children and their families safe as we move along the roadmap out of lockdown.

And Finally…

Enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend.

Transport to School

You will shortly receive a very short “Transport to School” survey. Please could you complete it as it will help with our strategic planning.

Thank you in advance for your support with this.

ParentPay for Catering

Please remember to top-up your child’s account on ParentPay at least a couple of hours before it is required (i.e. by 9am for use at breaktime). If possible, please top-up the day before.

Book of the Week

By Angie Thomas (YA)

“A hard-hitting return to Garden Heights with the story of Maverick Carter, Starr’s father, set seventeen years before the events of the award-winning The Hate U Give. With his King Lord dad in prison and his mom working two jobs, seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter helps the only way he knows how: slinging drugs.

Life’s not perfect, but he’s got everything under control.

Until he finds out he’s a father… Suddenly it’s not so easy to deal drugs and finish school with a baby dependent on him for everything.

So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it.

But when King Lord blood runs through your veins, you don’t get to just walk away.”

A powerful voice, this story will have you gripped!
