Issue 1003: 21st April 2023

Welcome Back

I hope you all had a lovely Easter holiday and enjoyed spending time with your families and friends.  I am sure that our Year 11 pupils and Year 13 students will have used the break constructively in preparation for the external exams.  With these already underway, I would like to take the opportunity to wish them all the very best of luck and the success they deserve.

Strike Days

As I am sure you will have heard in the press, there are 2 further days of industrial action planned, the first on Thursday 27th April and the second on Tuesday 2nd May. Given we are so close to the external examination season, we will be open to Year 11 and 13 on those days, and of course, to key worker and vulnerable children.  The advice to members of the NEU has changed to grant permission to members to attend school to teach these year groups, should they wish to.  However, the fact remains that colleagues are not obliged to tell me whether or not they will choose to come into school, although they may well inform the pupils themselves.  At such a critical time for Year 11 pupils and Year 13 students, I would urge you to encourage attendance on these days.  Remote learning will be provided by non-striking colleagues for all other year groups.

Please note, the GCSE Modern Foreign Languages Speaking Exams and the Business Studies presentations scheduled for next Thursday will be going ahead and attendance is essential.

The Year 7 Rewards Evening, currently scheduled for 2nd May, will be postponed and parents/carers will shortly be notified of a new date.

Parking around the School Site

Please can I remind parent/carers that the Bus Bay on Sir Walter Raleigh Drive must not be used for parking at any point during the school day, or at drop off or collection times.  We have had numerous reports of “near misses” and dangerous driving with cars mounting the pavements.  As well as a road safety issue, this is also proving problematic for the buses accessing and exiting the area.  I would ask that if your child does come to school by car, that you avoid this area.  Thank you for your cooperation.
