AWARD WINNERS

It was delightful at last Thursday's Awards Evening to see so many of our pupils receive awards for their learning last year. The names of all the award winners are included in Sweyne Park Times this week. All these pupils are to be congratulated on their efforts, as are all those pupils who were nominated for awards. Most of these award winners have two important things in common. Firstly, they are really committed to their learning and persevere when tasks become more challenging; please continue to encourage your child to develop a determined approach to their learning. Secondly, most of these pupils have a really good attendance record; regular attendance is acknowledged as a particularly important contributory factor to achievement at school.

Andy Hodgkinson (Headteacher), Laura (Year 11 Outstanding Pupil of the Year) and Simon Jones (Chief Executive, Investors in People UK) our Guest of Honour

MONITORING PROGRESS

In the last three weeks all pupils in Years 7 to 10 should have brought home a letter detailing their grades for this term. Please discuss these grades with your child. Pupils should be aiming for A or B grades for effort; a C grade indicates that their effort is not sufficient for them to be achieving their best. Attainment grades should be in line (or better!) with your child's school target grade. If you have any concerns about these grades, please discuss this with your child's head of year.

We have recently completed our learning review meetings with Year 11 pupils and their families. Now that their mock examinations are completed Year 11 pupils will be working on their individual review targets. Year 10 learning reviews start on 10th December.

SUPERB ART

At Awards Evening there was a great display of the Art produced by our pupils for their examinations last year. The quality of the work on show was superb and the variety was amazing. Well done to all involved!

CROSS COUNTRY

Well done to all those pupils who took part in the District Cross Country event last week, especially those who battled to the finishing line despite injuries. They were certainly displaying persistence and determination! Particular congratulations go to Luke Webb, Rebecca Terry, Suzanne Sabbarton and Amy Webb, who all finished extremely well in their respective races. Congratulations!

Pupil Voice in Action: Year 8 Year Council

The Year 8 Council has already been busy this term getting involved with the `Eco-School' campaign run by Miss Hann and in this week's assembly, those nominated to represent their tutor groups were awarded with their `Year Council' badges. Congratulations and well done to the following pupils; Harry, Lucy, Beth, Marcus, Tom, Abbie, Jake, Lacey, Harry, Lacey, Holly, Josh, Kathryn, Harry, Gemma, Harry, Beth and Josh.

If you have any ideas for what you think your Year Council should be doing or you want to get involved then look out for your representatives or see Mrs Spinks in ML5.

RUNEMARKS

By Joanne Harris

Maddy was born 500 years after the end of the world with a rusty-coloured runemark on her hand - a symbol of the old gods and a cause for suspicion.

Odin, Loki and the other Norse gods come to life in this hugely imaginative and very funny fantasy novel.

One of Richard & Judy's recommended children's reads.

This week every Year 7 pupil received a free book from the Booked Up National scheme. In September, each year 7 pupil chose their free book from a varied selection of 12 books.

After eagerly waiting since then, the pupils were told of the books' arrival in assembly on Wednesday morning. With much anticipation, boxes were taken to each tutor room. Each pupil received a goody bag containing their book and a bookmark.

This is a really exciting opportunity for lots of reading for enjoyment. Which book did you choose? What about your friends? Do you wish you'd chosen a different title? Don't forget you can swap with your friends after you've read your book! Do you want to try one of the other books too? We have all the titles in the school library, or why not pop along to your local library?

Check out the website www.bookedup.org.uk and log on to the Your Space area. There are loads of great things to see, including author interviews, celebrity favourite reads and you can vote for your favourite book. Which of the 12 is the most popular at the moment?

Enjoy reading your books and don't forget to come and tell me all about them!
