Recently ninety Year 9 pupils participated in a launch event for an exciting collaboration with artists and graphic designers from Royal Opera House Creative Partnerships to explore how chemical elements can be transformed into super hero figures.

An initial exercise to promote creative thinking was to look at everyday objects and come up with alternative uses – this could actually be a fun game! Original ideas included a tap from a sink becoming a mobile phone for plumbers, a hairbrush becoming a maze for ants, headphones becoming a brain reading device and science safety goggles becoming a swing for squirrels!

In the next stages pupils were challenged to link as many of the actual chemical properties of elements to possible super hero appearances and qualities. In forthcoming art lessons the pupils will be further developing their ideas and actually making families of super hero elements.
The day was a great success:
