COURSE CONTENT

GCSE Psychology provides pupils with the unique opportunity to study a subject which is not only very popular within Further Education but which also plays an integral role in many careers today. Pupils will study the five approaches to understanding human mind and behaviour and will study topics including memory, phobias and obedience. They will also carry out small-scale research projects using psychological research methods, such as observations and experiments. Since Psychology is a science, pupils should expect to study some biology and statistics during the course..

ASSESSMENT

The course is 100% examination, divided between three externally assessed papers:

  • Approaches in Psychology 1 (40%) and Approaches in Psychology 2 (40%): both require pupils to answer questions within five sections. Answers range from short responses to extended pieces of writing.
  • Research in Psychology (20%) requires pupils to answer questions in two sections, one of which requires them to plan an investigation based on a brief aim.

HOME LEARNING

Written based including research and practice exam questions, although pupils will be required to investigate practically a topic in small groups to facilitate their knowledge and understanding for the Research in Psychology paper.

EDUCATION EXTRA, SUPPORT AND TRIPS

Workshops and visits will be organised to enhance pupils’ knowledge and understanding.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP

Since Psychology is a topic that many pupils have not come across within their education before and many new and abstract concepts will be learnt, parents are encouraged to discuss pupils’ learning within the subject to facilitate the retention of knowledge gained. Parental support needed to complete set learning will also be appreciated. Finally, any extra-curricular activities should be encouraged as these will enhance learning.

SECURING SUCCESS

The department will provide support to enhance pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to confidently tackle exam questions. Parents/carers of pupils who are struggling or underachieving will be notified immediately and support given if and where necessary.
