The theoretical aspect covers four major topics which are examined through a 1½ hour exam. Included in this exam will be a pre-release scenario in which the pupils will use their knowledge of the course to write continuous prose.
The topics are:
- The range of physical activities and the different roles that the active participant can choose from. For example, individual differences (age, gender, disability), demands of the performer (motivation, stress, tension).
-
Linking physical activity with diet, work and rest for personal health and balanced healthy lifestyle. For example, active lifestyles, components of fitness, types of training and diet.
-
Making informed decisions about getting involved in a lifetime of balanced physical activities that suit individuals’ needs. For example, national curriculum requirements, school influences, leisure time and social groupings.
-
International and other factors. For example, the role of the media, sponsorship, role
models, use of technology.
THE ACTIVE PARTICIPANT - 60%
During the practical component the pupils will undertake a number of activities ranging from swimming to badminton to athletics. After every activity area the pupils will be assessed and awarded a mark. Within each activity area pupils will focus on various aspects from developing their skills, being creative and making decisions to officiating/leading and organising.
As the end of the course approaches the four best activity areas will be chosen and put forward to the final grade. Pupils will be assessed on their physical ability as well as leading, officiating and organising. Staff will guide pupils throughout the two years so that the best four areas are presented for assessment.
Due to timing, facilities and staff expertise we cannot teach every possible sport. If a pupil participates in a sport outside of school e.g. golf, mountain biking or judo, assessment can still occur. This should be discussed with the head of department.
ASSESSMENT
The theory aspect is assessed by staff during the course, who will monitor and evaluate the performance, and support is provided to promote pupils’ achievement. The practical aspect is continually assessed and marks provided at the end of every activity area. At the end of the course the pupils are moderated by an outside examiner.
