COURSE CONTENT

The Learning Development Department supports pupils’ individual needs across the curriculum and withdraws pupils where necessary for short periods of time.  The Department is continuing to develop whole school approaches to identifying, drawing up and monitoring programmes set up to facilitate progress for specific pupils. These programmes concentrate on skills in literacy and numeracy or may take the form of extension activities for the more able.

The Department operates in-class support, withdrawal for individuals or small groups and links with all subject departments to consider appropriate lesson materials and approaches. By KS4 it is considered that independence and working towards attendance at college or a work placement on leaving school is the main concern, so support is more specific than at KS3.

ASSESSMENT
More able pupils are identified through testing and teacher recommendations. Those with specific learning needs, whilst being identified in the same way, are placed on the appropriate stage of the SEN Code of Practice framework, if not already on the register.

INDIVIDUAL COURSES
Within the year tutor teams there is a member of staff working with the more able on extension tasks, and departments link with Learning Development to provide suitable curriculum tasks.

For others there are reading, spelling, numeracy and handwriting sessions as appropriate.

HOME LEARNING
Pupils of all abilities require individual assistance on occasions, and the Learning Development Department is available before or after school for this.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP
Parents are welcome to raise issues of under-achievement. Those pupils on Code of Practice Stages have regular reviews in school with a member of staff and parents are invited to meet with Learning Development staff.

Parents may wish to encourage pupils to attend home learning workshops and to seek help when necessary.

STAFF
Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator - Andrea White.

Any questions or concerns should be addressed to Andrea White.
