How can geography help me?
Geography is everywhere! It is well known as a subject that links to all other subjects in the curriculum. The skills developed can lead you to employment opportunities in an incredibly wide range of jobs including; journalism, media, marketing, accounting, engineering, ICT, travel and tourism, environmental management, marketing, business management and teaching.
What will I learn?
The world is always changing and geography gives you the opportunity to learn about these changes. There are four main course units:
Unit 1: Dynamic Planet
Want to learn about how physical geography combines to create a ‘life support system’ for the world? In this unit you will be able to study aspects of geology, ecosystems, the atmosphere and climate and the hydrological cycle.
Unit 2: People and planet.
What to learn about people and how they impact they have on places? This is a human geography unit and you will study how populations grow and change, where people live and work and how they exploit and use resources. Units 1 and 2 have optional sections which will allow you to study some topic in more detail.
Unit 3: Making Geographical Decisions:
Want to be able to make decisions on the evidence given to you? Studying a specific topic in detail e.g. Antarctica you will be taught how to make decisions based on the evidence provided. The skills you develop in this topic will not only go on to help you all aspects of this GCSE but also in other aspects of you life.
Unit 4: Researching Geography
Enjoy enquiry work? This section involves fieldwork and research, where you will collect data outside the classroom and present your findings. It involves a fieldtrip (either residential or non-residential) and the use of IT. You will complete all your write up in the classroom.
ASSESSMENT
Like to revise in chunks and not in one big block? This Geography GCSE is assessed through modules so you take exams throughout the two years and not just at the end. Units 1 and 2 are an hour long and worth 25% each. Unit 3 is a decision making exercise and will use pre-release material to prepare you for this exam. Its is also worth 25% and is assessed through a 1 hour paper. Your coursework (unit 4) makes up the final 25%. The paper has two tiers, higher where you can gain an A*-D grade and a foundation paper where pupils can gain a C-G grade.
COURSEWORK
It will be worth 25% of the total marks ( see unit 4)
EXAMINATION
Each paper has two tiers higher where you can gain an A*-D grade and a foundation paper where pupils can gain a C-G grade. This means you can work at the level that suits you.

This is set as per the home learning timetable.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP
Parents/carers are encouraged to help pupils in the collection of resources relevant to the course. A suggested list of background reading and useful texts will be sent home prior to the summer holiday at the end of Year 9. Pupils are also encouraged to subscribe to Wideworld - a geographical magazine which can be ordered through the school.
SECURING SUCCESS
The progress and performance of pupils will be monitored throughout the course. Parents/carers of pupils who are underachieving will be notified and Geography workshops will be organised for pupils who feel the need for reinforcement or to help those who find aspects of private study difficult.
