SKILLS FOR LIFE

ADULT LITERACY AND ADULT NUMERACY (ALAN)

COURSE CONTENT

These are based on the National Standards for literacy and numeracy.  The ALAN qualification can be the first step to gaining employment.  It  can benefit learners by boosting their confidence to go on and gain further skills and qualifications to fulfil their potential.  This course will be delivered in their English and Maths lessons.

ASSESSMENT

There are three entry levels:  Entry , Level 1 and Level 2 with each level divided into three components:

  Literacy
    Reading
    Speaking and Listening
    Writing
  Numeracy
    Handling Data
    Number
    Measures, Space & Shape

EXAM

Every level has one exam.  This will take place on-line and the results are processed and returned within twenty minutes.  The exams can be taken during year 10 or year 11 to meet the needs of individual pupils, and re-sits are possible.

A level 1 in both literacy and numeracy is equivalent to a GCSE grade D.
A level 2 in both literacy and numeracy is equivalent to a GCSE grade C.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP

Parents can help by reinforcing the key language and maths skills pupils are taught in lessons.  In addition regularly listening to your son or daughter read, and reading to them, testing them on spellings and encouraging them to answer maths problems will all support their learning.

Queries can be answered by John Smith, Examinations Officer.
