COURSE DETAILS
Physical Education in Years 7 to 9 follows the National Curriculum Key Stage 3. The pupils have two lessons per week - one indoor, one outdoor - organised into activity modules of six to eight weeks.
The activities covered include:
|
 |
| Netball |
Football |
Hockey |
Rugby |
Basketball |
| Cricket |
Rounders |
Badminton |
Tennis |
|
- Dance
- Gymnastics
- Athletics
- Swimming
The emphasis is placed on the development and extension of skills from Key Stage 2. Health Related Exercise underpins the activities offered and pupils learn the key elements of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Home learning, when set, supports under-standing of the curriculum.
Participation and school kit are compulsory and pupils are expected to bring their kit to lessons even when they are unable to take part in the activity through injury or illness. They will be given the opportunity to participate at an appropriate level. In the case of more serious illness or injuries exceptions will be made, although a prolonged inability to take part should be covered by a doctor’s medical note, after two weeks.
Assessment
Pupils are continually assessed and an annual report is produced as a summary of the year’s work. In this report pupils receive a grade for effort and attainment. Part of the reporting process is the setting of individual targets and this method of pupil support enables the department to cater for a wide range of needs.
Beyond The Classroom
The Physical Education Department offers a wide range of Education Extra activities that allow pupils to extend work both in a recreational and competitive environment. There will be the opportunity to represent Sweyne Park against other schools at District, County and National Level and pupils are also offered the chance to take part in Inter-Tutor Group Activities.
How Parents Can Help
We have enjoyed excellent parental support in Physical Education and would very much like to see this continue. The pupils who receive parental support in sporting activities benefit in terms of their development and enjoyment of the sport they take part in.
Securing Success
Parents will be notified either by letter or telephone of any serious concern experienced by the department regarding a pupil’s progress and level of achievement. Following such contact there will be an opportunity to discuss matters further in person. Should parents feel their son/daughter is not making progress, they should contact Howard Lee or the subject teacher.
